As we well know, a pet is a human’s best friend. Pets are kept specifically for an individual’s comfort, company, and entertainment. Like every other person, presidents require pets either for support or companionship. According to documented studies, pets have been known to raise one’s morale on a slow day or even help with stressful situations as most pets are loyal and stay with you the entire time. Generally, Dogs have been termed as man’s best friend since a man feels safe and accompanied when he is with his dog.

Over the years, presidents in the United States of America have moved to the white house with pets. Some of the pets owned by presidents over the years have ranged from dogs, mocking birds, cats, and horses. The most possessed animals, according to the majority rankings, are:

1. Dogs
Dogs are loyal to their masters and are always around by their master’s sides. A dog is the most common presidential pet; for many years dogs have resided in the white house while their owners were president.

• The newly elected President of the United States Joe Biden has a German shepherd dog named Major. German Shepherds are medium-sized dogs that originated from Germany. The president’s dog (Major) is the first shelter rescue dog to reside in the white house, Yuki who was rescued by Biden in the 2008 elections will also be joining major in the white house. Biden, like former President Lyndon B. Johnson, enjoys the company of his dogs.

• As noted by President Joe Biden, dogs are truly man’s best friend. “When you come home after a long and tiresome day in the office. Your dog is always there at the door to say hello while wagging his tail at you”. Essentially, owning a dog is advantageous because a dog never judges you; dogs never care about physical appearance. No matter what your situation is, your dog will always be excited to see you. Unlike other pets who may possess mood swings, a dog will always live in the moment, they never worry about the past but instead make your bad day a little better.

• A dog will always be happy with his/her owner. It doesn’t matter the gender or the state of your physical appearance, as long as you treat your dog with flea medicine now, to get rid of any infestation. Your dog will always be in a good and happy state.

• The dog is rated first as the most common presidential pet. Over 30 presidents who have held office in the United States of America have had dogs. The first president of the United States George Washington had a dog pet, others including Thomas Jefferson, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama also had presidential dogs.

2. Birds
Currently, birds are ranked second in the ranking list of presidential pets. To date, a total of 19 U.S. presidents have owned pet birds. Teddy Roosevelt, the 26th U.S. president, had several birds including a Hyacinth macaw and one-legged rooster. Teddy was fascinated by birds and in his spare time, he would document and record species of different birds residing within the white house.

• George Washington, one of the founding fathers, had a pet bird in the white house during his presidential term. His wife Martha owned a parrot. At the same time, Thomas Jefferson owned several mocking birds before he was president and after.

• Birds are both beautiful and mysterious; they communicate using specific sounds while agitated, stressed, or in danger. In the case of parrots, they are known as a home answering machine. Parrots can remember and mimic common communications within the household. Due to this skill, parrots are usually quite funny and can make you laugh and forget your problems even for a minute. Birds, like dogs and cats, are susceptible to blood-sucking fleas.

• Birds are best for anyone to adopt as house pets. Birds require little attention, the cost to care for them is low, and they will still lighten your day with their sweet singing voices.

3. Horses
Among other presidential pets, is the horse. Horses have been kept as pets by many presidents. George Washington loved many different animals and besides dogs and birds, President Washington loved his horse Nelson whom he kept in his home at Mount Vernon.  Nelson made history by achieving long-lasting peace and by ending revolutionary wars in the United States of America. When General Charles Conwell’s surrendered in Yorktown, George Washington was riding his favorite horse Nelson when he accepted the general’s surrender.

Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president, loved animals and cared greatly for them, and was well known for his charitable spirit. Had flea medicine existed at the time, we are sure he would have used it.  Among Lincoln’s pets were two goats are known as Nani and Nako and a horse.
Horses are vital for entertainment, and sports purposes, many United States presidents rode horses for fun and sporting activities.

4. Cats
• Cats are ranked fourth for the most common presidential pet. President Joe Biden joined the white house with a cat belonging to his wife, Dr. Jill Biden.

• Abraham Lincoln was well known for his love of cats. President Lincoln had two cats named Tabby and Dixie during his time as president. As a result of his love for cats, President Lincoln from time to time, would often bring in stray cats and rescue them from the harsh wild.

• Cats are excellent pets. They require very little space for them to thrive and exist. As long as you have got the essential requirements like flea medicine cats will thrive well. Cats are always neat and clean. Plus, a cat will not poop on your couch or tear your pillows to pieces.

The kind of pet a person can get depends on their needs, characteristics, and preference. Dogs are excellent pet animals as they support you and are friendly all the time. However; dogs require some more attention in comparasion to cats. Dogs need to be walked at least once a day, but generally, dogs are great animals. It is evident that dogs are preferred by many people, followed closely by cats and horses.
