Fleas, ticks and ear mites seem to be on a constant quest to find your pet. All of these parasites have the potential to cause a host of health conditions that can make life difficult and uncomfortable for your furry friend. Fortunately, as a pet owner, you can take steps to prevent infections caused by parasites. Keeping your pet’s environment clean is a great place to start. Here’s how you can clean your pet’s favorite areas — and your pet — to prevent parasites.

Break Out the Vacuum

If you have a cat or dog, you know how important it is to keep up with vacuuming. If you don’t pick up their fur at least once a week, you’ll find it everywhere. Once it gathers, it can start clogging the vacuum. However, running the vacuum does more than pick up stray furs. It also sucks in ticks, fleas and any other pests that are hiding in your carpet, waiting to pounce on your pet.

Sanitize Their Homes

Your pet loves to spend time in very specific areas of your home. These are often the perfect hiding places for pests. Make sure to clean, disinfect and dry all surfaces where your pet likes to eat, play and sleep. The cleaner you keep these areas of your home, the lower the chances of your pets picking up parasites.

Clean Pet Bedding

Use pet shampoo to thoroughly clean your pet’s bedding at least once a month. If your pet prefers your bed, make sure to clean your own bedding at least as often. Cloth surfaces are comfortable for people, pets — and, unfortunately, pests. Cleaning the bedding with soap and warm water can go a long way toward preventing parasites.

Keep Up with Grooming

Proper grooming does more than help your pet look and feel clean. Trimming your pet’s fur and keeping your pet clean can help protect your pet from parasite infestations. Whether you do these things yourself or let the groomer handle them, you need to make sure they’re done on a regular basis.

Use Parasite Prevention Products

Once-a-month treatment with a product like Revolt Topical can help keep cats and dogs safe from fleas and other parasites. There are also products like flea and tick baths that you can use to be extra sure that your pet doesn’t become infested with these parasites. Before starting a treatment program, be sure to talk to your veterinarian.
